‘Running monster’ – German media react to Wataru Endo Liverpool transfer

Wataru Endo’s move to Liverpool has been met with positive responses in Germany as VfB Stuttgart are set to lose their captain.

VfB Stuttgart’s Wataru Endo is on the verge of becoming Liverpool’s third summer signing.

After a long search to bring in cover for the departed Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, Jurgen Klopp appears to have found his ideal candidate in a leader for both club and country that is a specialist in mopping up play.

It is a surprising twist to the Reds’ midfield rebuild, though one that has been met with open arms in Germany for a number of reasons, similar to response Dominik Szoboszlai received ahead of finalising his £60m transfer earlier this summer.

The ECHO reported last night that contact had been made with Stuttgart for the versatile midfielder, who can also slot into defence. The fee has initially been stated as in the region of £16m.

Once in a lifetime opportunity

A common theme in the German media, kicked off by BILD, is a dispute over the player’s price. Reports over there suggest the deal is closer to €20m (£17m) rising to €25m (£21m) with bonuses. Given the aforementioned contract situation, it is stated that this is a ‘mega sum that VfB could not refuse’.

They also write that Endo is in Liverpool as of this morning, ready to undergo a formal medical. Highlighted in bold text is Jorg Schmadtke’s influence in agreeing this deal, as well as the fact the player himself requested to be given this ‘unique chance to switch to the English cult club’.

Their article ends with a clear six-word message: “Endo’s time at VfB is over.”

Klopp influence and seal of approval

Klopp is known to be a popular character back in his native land, and Sky Germany begin their latest update with the headline: “Surprise deal! BL captain moving to Klopp.”

And although this is not particularly coming from Germany itself, commentator for Sky Sports’ British coverage of the Bundesliga, Dan O’Hagan, has waxed lyrical about the defensive midfielder ahead of his transfer.

He simply said: “He [Endo] will be a terrific asset – a running monster.”

Win-lose situation

Taking the crown for best tribute is Kicker, who say that Endo has earned the honorary nickname ‘Legendo’ for his performances and goal against Koln last season to keep VfB in the German top-flight.

It is stated that a switch to the Premier League has long been the Japan international’s dream, and although Stuttgart will be losing ‘their most important player’ and the situation is a loss on the sporting front, it is ultimately a financial gain to sell now.

Dream move

Local outlet Stuttgarter Nachrichten reiterate the fact this is a dream move for Endo, who claim he has ‘repeatedly’ said in the past he wishes to play in the English top-flight.

A common theme in their live updates is that the German side will be losing their captain, so must find a replacement heading into the start of their new season this weekend.
