Liverpool fans had their say when Moises Caicedo conceded a penalty after coming off the bench to make his Chelsea debut this afternoon
Moises Caicedo suffered a nightmare start to life in a Chelsea shirt, conceding a penalty in injury time as West Ham defeated their London rivals 3-1.
The Ecuadorian infamously rejected the opportunity to join Liverpool last week as he held off interest from Merseyside to seal a British-record £115m switch to Chelsea on Monday, saying he ‘didn’t have to think twice’.
It was the first deal of the week that saw the Reds come out second best to their Premier League rivals as Romeo Lavia followed suit later this week, completing a £58m transfer of his own.
However neither were included in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting line-up for the cross-city trip to the Hammers on Sunday with Pochettino citing their lack of time with the squad and the mental toll on both as a result of their transfer sagas as the main factors.
Lavia was not involved at all whereas Caicedo started from the bench, eventually being handed his Chelsea debut with a 61st-minute entrance with his new side trailing 2-1.
Ultimately he had the impact no player dreams of, giving away a spot kick in injury time for clumsily lunging in on Emerson Palmieri which was subsequently dispatched by Lucas Paqueta.
On commentary duty for Sky Sports, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said: “Moises Caicedo has had a nightmare since coming on. It is a poor lazy challenge!”
And he wasn’t the only one to have a say. Reds supporters took to Twitter to express their thoughts on the player that their club missed out when his £110m deal fell through last week – here are a selection of the responses:
@AnythingLFC_: “Endo would never.”
@Kloppholic: “Pump-faked Chelsea into spending £115m on Caicedo.”
@Tactical_Times: “The level of scrutiny on Moises Caicedo’s performance is crazy and will only get worse. Another consequence of a deal that big.”
@AnfieldRd96: “Fernandez: Missed a penalty. Caicedo: Conceded a penalty. Lavia: Sitting at home. I love this game.”
@Joel_archie: “This Caicedo disasterclass is going down a treat.”
@LFCTransferRoom: “Wataru Endo on his debut: 3-1 win. £115m Moises Caicedo on his debut: Gives away penalty, loses 3-1.”
@JoshLFC1909: “Best spend another £500m to fix all those problems @todd_boehly.”
